Proper Golf Grip – pt. 3
Step 1: Clap both your hands together with your palms flat against
each other and your thumbs pointing straight up in the air.
(This is the position you want to achieve with your grip.)

Step 2: With your palms still together, imagine you have a club in
your hands and address an imaginary ball, the back of your left
hand and the palm of your right hand should be parallel to the
imaginary target line.
Note: Rotate your hands clockwise and notice that now the back
of your left hand and the palm of your right hand face to the right
of your target line. (Strong grip) Rotate your hands counter
clockwise and notice that your hands face to the left of your target
line. (Weak grip)
Step 3: Take a club and hold it straight out in front of you with the
shaft straight up and down and with the toe of the club pointing
directly at you.
The scoring lines on the face of the club should be parallel to your
intended target line
Step 4: Place the club diagonally across your left hand with the butt
of the club resting against the butt of your left hand.
Now wrap your left hand around the grip and notice that you cradle
the grip in the first and second joints of your index finger and the
club is stabilized in the butt of your hand.
NOTE: Remember the back of your left hand should face down a line
parallel to your intended target line.
Step 5: Place your right hand on the club.
The club should rest in the middle and ring fingers of your right
hand with the index finger and thumb merely resting on the shaft.
You should not feel any pressure in the index and thumb or your
right hand.
NOTE: Remember the palm of your right hand should face down a
line parallel to your intended target line
Proper Golf Grip Tips
You have several choices for your right pinky position when developing a proper golf grip.
The choice of these positions is up to you and should be based on hand size and more importantly on comfort.
OVERLAP Version of a Proper Golf Grip – You can overlap your right pinky on top of the index
finger of your left hand or in the crease between the index and
middle finger of your left hand
BASEBALL Version of a Proper Golf Grip – You can simply wrap your right pinky around the shaft
so that all 10 fingers are in contact with the shaft.
Note: If you have small hands or maybe you have arthritis in your
hands this might be a good choice for you.
INTERLOCK Version of a Proper Golf Grip – You can lift the index finger of your left hand off the
grip and interlock the pinky finger of your right hand underneath it.
(Jack Nicklaus made this grip famous)
PLEASE REMEMBER: Whatever right pinky position you choose, your
right palm must face parallel to the intended target line. (Left handers simply reverse my verbiage)
Once you’ve found this neutral position, practice it as much as you
possibly can and make every effort to make this grip second nature.
You can practice your proper golf grip sitting in front of the TV, listening to
music, wherever and whenever you choose. The more you practice
this grip, the better you’ll swing the club and the longer, straighter,
and more consistent all your shots will be and you’ll shoot lower scores.
An added benefit of developing this neutral grip is that once you’re dialed in on
it, you can use the same grip for virtually every shot you play. You
won’t believe how comfortable you’ll feel over shots that used to
scare you to death and your friends won’t believe the low scores
you keep posting.
If you want to improve your golf swing quickly, hit more quality shots and shoot lower scores…
